AEO Explained: How to Get ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI to Recommend Your Business
Right now, someone in your city is typing 'best [your service] near me' into ChatGPT — and it's answering with names. If yours isn't one of them, this post is the fix. Not theory. The actual mechanics of how AI chooses, and the seven moves that get you chosen.

SEO got you ranked. AEO gets you recommended.
You already know the old game: SEO (search engine optimization) helps your website rank in a list of links. The customer still has to click, compare, and decide.
AEO — answer engine optimization — is the new game. Answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini, Copilot) don't hand the customer a list. They hand them an answer — usually two or three businesses, named outright, with reasons.
That changes everything about what "visibility" means: Ranking #4 on Google used to be fine. In an AI answer, there is no #4 — you're named, or you're invisible. The AI writes the first impression for you, from whatever it can find and verify about your business. The customer often calls the named business without ever visiting a search results page.
This is the practical follow-up to our breakdown of SEO, AEO, and GEO — and it runs on the trust foundation we covered in What Is E-E-A-T?. AEO is where that foundation pays out.
How an AI actually builds its answer
When someone asks an AI for a recommendation, it works in roughly three steps:
- It interprets the question — service, location, intent, and the signals of quality a person would care about.
- It gathers sources it trusts — business websites, Google Business Profiles, review platforms, directories, local press, "best of" lists, and community discussions.
- It synthesizes and names names — cross-checking facts across sources and recommending the businesses whose information is clear, consistent, and corroborated.
Notice what it's not doing: it's not reading your mind, and it's not fooled by a pretty homepage. It recommends the business it can verify. Your job is to make verification easy.
How AI picks who to recommend
Your Website
Deep, answer-first service pages. Real questions, real answers, a named expert behind them.
Can I quote this business?Your Google Profile
Complete, current, and identical to your website — name, address, phone, hours, services.
Do the facts line up?Your Reviews
Fresh, specific, and answered. AI quotes what your customers actually say about you.
What do customers report?Mentions + Links
'Best of' lists, local press, chambers, partners — other trusted sources vouching for you.
Who else says so?"We recommend your business — because your facts check out."
The 7 moves that get AI to recommend you
1. Make your facts machine-clear — everywhere.
AI builds an "entity" of your business from every source it can find. When your name, address, phone, hours, categories, and services agree everywhere, it trusts the entity. When they conflict, it quietly picks a competitor whose facts line up.
Your two entity anchors are your website and your Google Business Profile. Make them identical and complete, then work outward to directories and socials. This is the Trustworthiness work from E-E-A-T — AEO is where it cashes in.
2. Answer real questions, in plain language, on your own site.
Answer engines pull answers from pages that actually answer. For every core service, you want a page that: opens with a direct answer ("What does it cost? What does it involve? Who is it for?") before the detail; uses the questions customers literally ask as headings; includes an FAQ section written the way people talk — and ask AI.
Thin "services" pages with three buzzwords per service give AI nothing to quote. Depth is what gets cited.
3. Build the trust signals AI cross-checks (E-E-A-T).
AI recommendations lean on the same trust framework Google's raters use: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness. Named providers with bios, real photos, real results, credentials where they matter, content a practitioner — not a content farm — would write. We laid out the whole framework in our E-E-A-T guide; it's the engine under everything in this post.
4. Get mentioned by sources that aren't you.
AI learns who matters from the wider web, not just your website. Mentions and citations that move the needle: local "best of" and roundup lists in your category; chamber of commerce and reputable directory listings; local press, podcasts, and event features; partner and supplier pages that name you; quality backlinks from relevant sites.
One genuine local feature can outweigh fifty directory spam listings. AI weighs who is vouching, not just how many.
5. Treat reviews as AI training data — because they are.
Assistants quote review language in their answers ("customers praise the short wait times…"). What works: a steady flow of fresh reviews, not a burst from 2022; reviews that mention specific services and outcomes — ask happy customers for detail, not just stars; responses to every review — it signals an active, real business; presence beyond Google: Yelp, Facebook, and your industry's platforms.
6. Structure your site so machines can read it.
Give AI clean material to work with: schema markup — LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, and review structured data that states your facts in machine language; clear heading structure — one topic per page, descriptive headings; fast, mobile-clean pages that crawlers can actually render; descriptive page titles that say the service and the city.
This is unglamorous plumbing. It's also the difference between being read and being skipped.
7. Say things worth quoting.
AI cites content that is quotable: clear definitions, honest price ranges, numbered processes, original data, and specific local knowledge. "We're a full-service boutique agency leveraging synergies" is unquotable. "Most Charleston homeowners pay $X–$Y for this service, and here's why" gets quoted — with your name attached.
If your content could belong to any business in any city, AI will treat it that way.
Test yourself: the 10-prompt AI visibility check
Stop guessing and ask the machines directly. Run these prompts in ChatGPT and Perplexity (logged out or in a fresh chat, so it's not just echoing your history), swapping in your service and city:
- "Who is the best [service] in [city]?"
- "Recommend a [service] near [neighborhood] for [specific need]."
- "What are the top-rated [service] businesses in [city], and why?"
- "How much does [service] cost in [city], and who offers it?"
- "Which [service] in [city] is best for [your ideal client]?"
- "Is [your business name] a good choice for [service]?" — then read how it describes you.
- "What do customers say about [your business name]?"
- "Alternatives to [your biggest competitor] in [city]"
- "Who should I call for [urgent version of your service] in [city]?"
- "What questions should I ask before hiring a [service] in [city]?" — are you the kind of business its answer describes?
Score it honestly: named (with accurate facts), named but wrong (facts off — a consistency fire to put out), or absent. Repeat monthly. Movement here is your AEO scoreboard.
What doesn't work (save your money)
- Keyword stuffing and AI-generated fluff at scale — answer engines are trained to spot and skip it; it dilutes the expertise signal you're trying to build.
- Fake or bought reviews — platforms and AI both detect patterns, and one exposure torches the trust everything else built.
- Bought mentions on junk "news" sites — low-quality citations teach AI the wrong neighborhood to associate you with.
- Chasing every new AI hack — the fundamentals above are what every engine's answers are actually built from.
Your first 30 days
- Week 1 — Verify. Run the 10-prompt check. Audit your website vs. Google Business Profile vs. top directories for conflicting facts. Fix the conflicts.
- Week 2 — Answer. Pick your three money services. Rewrite or build their pages answer-first, with real FAQs and a named expert behind them.
- Week 3 — Prove. Add or refresh reviews flow, publish one piece of experience-based content (a real result, a real story), and claim the reputable listings you're missing.
- Week 4 — Get cited. Pitch one local list, one podcast or feature, and three partner mentions. Add schema for your business, services, and FAQs.
Then re-run the prompts. This compounds — every accurate mention makes the next recommendation more likely.
The bottom line
Search made customers do the comparing. AI does the comparing for them — and recommends the business it can verify fastest. AEO is simply making sure that's you: clear facts, real answers, earned trust signals, and a reputation other sources confirm.
We build exactly that — websites and search presence designed to be found on Google, cited by AI, and chosen before the call ever happens.
Questions about AEO
What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?
AEO is optimizing your online presence so AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini — name and recommend your business in their answers. Where SEO earns a ranking in a list of links, AEO earns a place in the answer itself.
How does ChatGPT decide which businesses to recommend?
It synthesizes sources it can access and trust — your website, Google Business Profile, reviews, directories, and mentions across the web — then names businesses whose facts are consistent and corroborated. Businesses with conflicting or thin information are usually left out.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No — AEO builds on SEO. The technical health, content depth, and authority that drive rankings also feed AI answers. What's changed is the finish line: instead of a click from a list, you're competing to be named in a synthesized answer.
How can I check if AI recommends my business?
Ask directly. Run prompts like "Who is the best [service] in [city]?" in ChatGPT and Perplexity from a fresh, logged-out chat, and note whether you're named, described accurately, or absent. Repeat monthly to track progress — or run our free Presence Audit for a scored version.
Do reviews really affect AI recommendations?
Yes. Assistants draw on review platforms when forming answers and often quote review themes — specific services, outcomes, wait times, staff names. Fresh, detailed, answered reviews give AI credible, current material to cite in your favor.
How long does AEO take to work?
Fact fixes and profile completion can change answers within weeks as sources are re-crawled. Authority signals — mentions, reviews, citations — compound over months. The businesses winning AI recommendations in your market started before their competitors noticed the game changed.
